Join the Beverly Area Planning Association Aug. 5 for its annual Music Under the Stars family concert on the grounds of Morgan Park Academy, 2153 W. 111th St. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with free dance lessons for all ages courtesy of The Dance Gallery. Rich Daniels and the City Lights Orchestra take the stage at 7 p.m. to perform contemporary, popular, swing, big band and jazz.
The City Lights Orchestra, a 32-piece band, was founded in 1974 by composer, arranger, saxophone player and conductor Rich Daniels. Based in Chicago, Daniels and the band have played throughout the United States and abroad, and have accompanied a variety of top name musicians and groups, including Garth Brooks, Tony Bennett, Michael Bolton, Ray Charles, The Temptations and Manhattan Transfer.
Specializing in the big band sound, the City Lights Orchestra has a repertoire that spans generations and includes music by George Gershwin, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller as well as the great songs of Hollywood film and Broadway.
Seating for Music Under the Stars is on the lawn. Bring blankets or chairs from home, or rent chairs when you get there for just $1.
Picnic style foods and beverages will be available for purchase from favorite local vendors Calabria Imports, Original Rainbow Cone, Dish Catering, and Town Liquor, or pack a picnic basket. A fireworks display follows the concert.
Music Under the Stars patron are invited to bring their old cell phones to donate to Cell Phones for Seniors, a program that provides free 911 emergency cell phones to seniors who do not have a cell phone. Old phones are reprogrammed to call 911, then provided free to seniors.
The suggested admission donation is $15 per person or $25 per family (two adults with children) or $10 for seniors.
