Queen of Martyrs parishioner and lifelong Evergreen Park resident Maureen Murphy has died.

The Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee member for Congressional District 1 and the Worth Township GOP Chairman died Saturday after a long battle with lung cancer.

The 55-year-old was the first woman and first Republican to serve in the Cook County Board of Review. She served from 1998 to 2007.

She also served as state representative representing Illinois' 36th District from 1993 to 1997.

A public memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16, at Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, 103rd Street and Central Park Avenue. Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. followed by a memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m.
