Officer guilty in Morgan Park teen's death
More than a year and a half after a 15-year-old Morgan Park boy was killed when a speeding car hit him at the intersection of 109th Street and Vincennes Avenue, a Chicago police officer was convicted Monday of reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident and filing a false police report.
During a hearing at Cook County Criminal Court, Judge Michael P. Toomin found Charlton McKay, 34, guilty of Edward Lucas' death and attempting to cover up the incident. He faces up to 14 years in prison.
According to witnesses, McKay - a nine-year veteran of the department - was at a Calumet Park bar shortly before the incident. They testified that he was driving at an estimated 50 m.p.h. when he struck Lucas.
McKay later claimed that his car had been stolen and that the thief was driving it when it killed Lucas.
Lucas was walking home the evening of Sept. 22, 2005, when the car drove through a stop sign and struck him.
The car was later found near McKay's house with a bottle of gin on the front seat.
McKay is scheduled to be sentenced June 19.
