A quick visit to the farm

» Read similar stories filed under:

Let me introduce myself. My name is Kenneth "Kenny" Aggen Born 5/28/40 in Blue Island. Back in July while on a business trip to the Chicago area I visited the "Last Chicago Farm" on 111th Street. I am one of two brothers still living who grew up on the farm as kids. We both worked the land growing up with my parents and grandparents. After graduating High School and getting married my wife and I moved into the house my dad built for his bride at 3855 west 111th. I worked the farm and the farmstand with my dad, uncle and grandmother until 1968 when my wife and I moved to Texas with three little boys. My dad and uncle worked the land till 1972 till they retired and turned over the lease to a neighbor farmer who farmed and ran his stand there till the mid 80s and the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences was built and opened. I have a pretty good collection of old photos and other memorbelia from the years the Aggen family were caretakers of the farmland. I would enjoy sharing memories with anyone interested in Mount Greenwood and its agricultural history. It was nice to look south and west from the school and see the view is not changed except for the direction the rows of vegetables are planted. I did not go east on 111th past the farm so did not see the Mount Greenwood Reformed Church where I met my wife and were married and the kids were baptized as we were.

I read with fond memories Kenny Aggen's comment about "a quick visit to the farm. My name is Pat Terrell born 2/23/1943. Grew up on 110th and Ridgeway, a stones throw from the farm. A younger Brother, John, and I hung around the farm all the time. I remember that the Aggens had some Grandkids that were around quite a bit of the time, one probably being you Kenny. I remember your Grandmother and Grandfather mostly. Seems they were the ones that did most of the rousting, especially your Grandmother. I vividly remember her weathered face and silver hair that she always wore tied back in a bun. I also remember that she was never without her money apron that she used to run the vegetable stand. I remember riding out into the fields on the back of an old Model A or T flat bed truck where we would be dropped off to pick crops. Your Granddad used to pay us with a burlap sack of fresh corn that we would then carry around the neighborhood and sell door to door. I remember the two houses, one your Grand Parents and one your Mom and Dad's. I remember the vegetable stand with the tables for the vegetables and things. I can still see the scale that hung at the stand for weighing what was bought. I remember three barns or out buildings with the one that was the most east and facing west that had a beautiful old green car with the yellow spoked wheels. I seem to remember your Grandmother and Grandfather going to church in it on Sunday evenings down at the First Dutch Reformed Church at 111th and Drake. I also remember in the fall your Grandfather would put pumkins all over the fields to turn them under the ground and how he would let us kids go out and pick out a nice one for Halloween. Well anyhow thanks for writing your article back in Aug of last year. It gave me a wonderful chance to enjoy the memories. By the way, do you happen to have a picture looking out your driveway at 111th Street. I've had a big bet going for a long time with my Brother John about where Rosie's Candy Shop was on the north side of the street. It was a white frame store that was part of an old florist shop and green house. Good old penny candy.......

I am the pastor of Mount Greenwood Reformed Church (First Reformed Dutch Church) and read your account. I have heard many fine stories about your family and the farm from many of the older members here. Many members read your account and several discussions were started as memories flowed. Thanks for sharing your memories with me and the church!
