Any ideas for the South Side parade?

» Read similar stories filed under:

Evergreen Park has declined to host the South Side Irish Parade, but Editor Michael Fielding and CLTV host Garrard McClendon discussed the demise of the South Side St. Patrick's Day Parade on "Garrard McClendon Live."

They heard from neighbors both supporting and criticizing the parade committee's decision to cancel the beloved event after a host of problems during this year's parade - including assaults of nearly a dozen police and the arrests of two couples couples engaging in sexual behavior in public, not to mention countless reports of public urination and defacation throughout the neighborhoods.

The parade committee has made it clear that the tradition will live on - just in a different format. So let us know what you think would be good alternatives to maintaining the tradition of the event while keeping in mind that it was founded on the values of faith, family and heritage.

Committee member Mary Beth Sheehan told us the other day that the committee will need to know pretty soon what neighbors want - so get moving. Let us know, call (773-393-8687) or e-mail the parade committee at southsideirishparade@yahoo.com, or ask your families and neighbors what they'd like to see.

Have SXU host the event on their grounds. Charge to get in. Individual rate, family rates and children 5 and under and our seniors for free. Music, dancing, comedy stages along with food. Coolers allowed as much as you try to stop them, they keep coming in anyway. Although beer sales is a great money maker. If it can be enforced, nix coolers allowed. SXU is private property and will charge anyone who misbehaves. Off duty cops could be hired, if union and city rules allow it. Have a maximum capacity or have presale of tickets with names on a list so that duplicates cannot be made. Mount Greenwood Irish Fest. Beverly could have something similar. The more there are ( mini festivals ) the less of a chance that is will become overcrowded in any one area.

Tell Us About Your Neighbors

We all know someone who’s worth the recognition, that neighbor or friend or family member who has an interesting story to tell … but one that not enough people know about. There’s enough bad news today that a little good news about our own neighbors could be just the right thing to keep us focused on what really matters: our community. So why not spread the word? Let us know in 200 words or less why you think someone deserves a little extra recognition. You’ll automatically receive 10 points (50 if we feature that person). Send a Neighbor Name to us.
