Fewer police this holiday season?
Is it true that the 22nd District will have half a dozen fewer sergeants supervising the neighborhoods this holiday season?
A neighbor tipped us off the other day that the Chicago Police Department may be transferring six sergeants from the 22nd District to two other districts.
"We're entering the holiday season, where more police presence is needed on the Western Ave. and 95th St. shopping areas, not less," the neighbor wrote. "Who will be supervising the rank and file officers if they short the district this many sgt's? Rather than take the sgt's from the 022nd District, wouldn't it be more logical to reassign sergeants now assigned to inside positions at Headquarters to pick up the slack?"
We called CPD's New Affairs and talked to Deputy Director Patrick Camden, who said that districts typically replace the number of transferred officers by transferring the same amount in to the district.

Back to page topAfter speaking further with Camden, we've learned that the CPD is not planning the transfer of any sergeants. Instead, he confirmed, six sergeants have been "detailed out" of the district to other districts on an as-needed basis.
Those moves are only temporary, acknowledged Camden, who did confirm that three patrol officers were, in fact, transferred out, although they were replaced by two patrol officers. Transfers, Camden said, are conducted by seniority and are voluntary.
