CHAS...the Ag School

» Read similar stories filed under:

My 8th grade son did not get in, and I am very unhappy. Having four children, Catholic High School is just far too expensive, but we have no other option if we live in the city. A friend of ours teaches at Morgan Park, and said that he would never send his own kids there. He told us that they have kids roaming the halls that do not even go to school there, and he is trying to find another job, because he doesn't feel safe there.

It really makes me angry that we have a high school just 2 blocks away, but my son can't attend. Our neighborhood does not have its own high school, and they built one that our kids can't use. Does this drive anyone else insane?

So does anyone know the formula for entrance to the AG? I know they are locked in at 600 students. Isn't 30% supposed to be 1/3rd neighborhood, 1/3 citywide and 1/3 siblings? Does anyone know? Could having a new principal this year have effected who gets in? How many kids applied to get in this year? This certainly opens up the debate on a neighborhood public high school being built here in Mt Greenwood. If only a few spots are open at the AG and you are not Catholic, is the already overcrowded Morgan park our only option? We pay our taxes why? Instead of Walgreen's on 111th and Kedzie, build a school.

Yes, my son didn't get in to the Agg School either. I'm a visually impaired, single parent and can not afford private education either. Why should I? He is discouraged. My older son goes to Morgan Park and says his classes are always interrupted with fights. I worry about him each time he leaves. They promised me it would get better but its not. I grew up here and wanted my children to do the same Now should I pick up and leave just because I can't get a decent education at a high school in my own neighborhood? Not fair to our kids in this community.

I think the Ag school should be for neighborhood kids first and then have a lottery for any outside kids. For their safety we can not send our kids to Morgan Park. Rugi said she would never put an addition on that school but then she did anyhow. We paid for it and our kids cannot even go there. Be a thorn in her side and keep complaining about this. Maybe she will get sick of hearing from everyone and do something. Also, I would like to know if we can get a drivers education class that the Ag school. That way we would not have to send our kids to Morgan Park or Bogan.

Wasn't that one of the campaign promises (lies) to make the Ag more of a neighborhood school? What ever happend to that promise???? Hey 19th Ward, are you working on this? Keep up the calls and make some noise. Again, nothing getting done in Mt Greenwood. Correction, I did see the fencing going up for the new playground at Mt Greenwood Park. Progress done by residents not politicians.

Well, we got a letter in the mail yesterday welcoming our son to the Ag school. We have until today to return it! I am very relieved, and I think because some of the kids that got in did not accept, they have a few spots open. Anyone else whose child did not get in should give the school a call asap, before they give the spots away.

Both Beverly and Mt Greenwood are in need of a high school, it really should be remedied so that our kids have somewhere to go. It is hardly fair that we all just grit our teeth and send our kids to private school with no option. In any other area, this would be unacceptable, but because we are in the city, we are the lowest priority.
