New library necessary for SXU?

» Read similar stories filed under:

As stated earlier, Saint Xavier University has hired the architectual firm Frye Gillian Molinaro to design its new library. This means that the new building is becoming a reality.

Over the last 10-15 years, SXU has expanded to become a more respected institution on the national level, but much of the expansion has not been accepted by nearby Mount Greenwood residents. I remember 15 years ago when the football field now known as Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field was being built, a number of residents in Tally's Corner would have signs posted that read, S.X.U. S.U.X. Although the campus looks a lot nicer as a whole than it did 15 years ago, people seem to not be proud of the fact that their is a rising institution of higher learning in the area. They are against any part of the area being known as a minor "college town."

However, I am not sure that the new library is needed. The Cardinal Stritch library located in the Warde Academic Center is more than adequate. It might not be as big as libraries at other Universities, whenever I need any information it is more than helpful. And what about the people who live on the south side of 103rd street? Shouldn't the University take in to account that people have been living there for years and would have to relocate? The new library is most likely destined to be between the Graham School of Management and Gilhooley's Grande Saloon, both of which are owned by Saint Xavier University.

Is SXU going too far with their expansion, or are Mount Greenwood residents proud of having a rising University in the area?
