The parking pillory
I'll be posting a photo soon, but here's a little anecdote illustrating how little police presence we have in the western half of the 22nd District.
I live near a public school, one of several campuses run by Chicago Public Schools in the area. My driveway is often (several times weekly) entirely blocked by parents stopping to drop off or pick up their children.
It's a regular occurrence, and after dozens of calls directly to the school made no impact (as I stated, they avoid parking down the street and instead opt for the most convenient spot before exiting the vehicles and leaving them there as if my driveway is some sort of valet parking space), I was told by police to call 911.
In the last year, I estimate that I have made at least a dozen calls to 911 reporting the situation. See, here's the thing: My wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant. My daughter was born prematurely and was subject to serious health issues. My last dog died suddenly, despite a frantic drive to the emergency vet. These days we have several dogs.
The point? Emergencies happen all the time. So let's forget about the courtesy aspect. Obviously these people have no courtesy (and, like I said, are a little more than simply too lazy to walk around the block). They're arrogant and careless.
So by the time a squad arrives, which is typically 45 minuntes to an hour afterward, they're gone. No evidence of a law being broken, no evidence that my wife and I just shortly before were prohibited entrance to or exit from our driveway - which is our privately owned property that ensures access to the public right of way, and the police need to enforce that.
But nothing. In fact, I'm working from home today - because my wife actually thinks she may be in labor, by the way! - and sure enough, here she comes: Parks from curb to curb, prohibiting any possible exit, as she turns the vehicle off and heads inside the school for her child. Nearly 15 minutes later she hadn't left, and I was told police would be on their way.
That was an hour ago. Nothing. Not even a call from police asking for more information. She strutted out of the school and drove off, never to be ticketed.
But here's the thing: With very little police response and no cooperation from the school, I've decided to photograph every vehicle that blocks the driveway. Each photo will be accompanied by a description of the vehicle and the driver. I'm hoping these people may respond to some public humiliation.
There's a good chance it won't, but since I can't write a parking ticket myself (which is in itself a humiliating experience), I'll be sending the offenders to my own private pillory. Enjoy.

I am not going to let you...
Back to page topI am not going to let you have all the fun!! I am going to start taking pictures of cars speeding through the stop sign by my house. 9 out of 10 cars that drive down my street don't even tap on their brakes. They pick up speed!! I have also had problems in the past with cars ignoring a stopped bus in front of my house. Now my neighbor parks his car on the other side of the street so no one can get by.
I know this happens all over our neighborhood. One afternoon I picked my son up from school. I stopped at the stop sign to find a parent patrol using her phone to take a picture of a SUV that did not bother stopping while a little boy was attempting to cross the street.

you must be one of those...
Back to page topyou must be one of those pinheads that live across from mt. greenwood school....according to your "1 hour" later the police arrived which was at 2:42. that means the school gets out at 1:45. sorry to tell you sir...mt. greenwood is a neighborhood school...that means NEIGHBORHOOD kids go there!
I will have to disagree...
Back to page topI will have to disagree about only neighborhood kids attending Mt.Greenwood school. I know for a fact that there a number of children who are bussed in from other neighborhoods. Some of these children also get dropped off. That also goes for Keller. Not all of the children that are enrolled reside in Mt. Greenwood. SO, it is very likely that some of the problems are being caused by "outsiders". Three out of the five days I drop my son off at school, I experience drivers who do not bother to stop at a two way stop sign, when I have the right away. Do they look over and wave sorry? nope, they speed off like nobody's business. Mt. Greenwood school is not the only school that dismisses at 1:45.
Referring to how disrespectful kids can become, my husband and I were driving down 111th street before the park earlier this evening. There was of group of kids, probably HS kids; Cars were moving in both directions, these kids did not look before stepping out onto the street,(not in a crosswalk) which forced all the cars to brake immediately. That is pure ignorance. That behavior is showing up more and more all around us. From parents down to children. I, too will continue to take pictures of speeders blowing the stop signs by my house.
When you video and take...
Back to page topWhen you video and take pictures, get a shot of the city sticker (doubt they have one) and the person driving. They can easily say someone else was driving their car. I did have the unfortunate luck to slide thru a couple of stop signs this last week. The ice is terrible and may be contributing to this. 911 is useless.
Mt Greenwood School's Principal has taken on a very aggressive campaign on dangerous drivers. You can see her out there every morning at drop off along with the Vice Principal, staff and many parent volunteers. It isn't perfect but it is much better than it was. The school near you should have its principal out on your driveway if she cares anything about the surrounding community. Attend the next LSC meeting and give them your complaint and photos.
Park your car on the street and ask a neighbor to help. When she goes in to school double park so she can't get out. You "lost your keys in the snow" until CPD arrives. I hope this time they do take an hour. Make sure CPD checks for insurance as well. Videoing these drivers, in most cases, embarasses them into behaving better, but what about those who do not live in the area? Do they hold the same standards about following the law?
Email and call the 19th Ward continuously about this matter. The squeaky wheel!

Back to page topI had a confrontation with one parent about a year ago and - no, she doesn't live in the neighborhood. Neither do the others, I suspect. I may get into more detail at a later date.

Back to page topaccording to this you say that the parent does not live in the neighborhood? and neither do the others? so...no one that goes to this school is from the neighborhood????? wow...that is amazing???!!!!

maybe you should have not moved across from a school.

Back to page topGood morning.
This is a forum for neighbors to write about their concerns; good and not so good. What it comes down to is the lack of courtesy of drivers. I would enjoy reading about positive events happening in Mt. Greenwood and Beverly. I, personally can't think of anything positive to write about at this time. I am happy to see new members replying to the posts!! GETOVERIT do you have any good news about the Beverly area?
Just because you live by a...
Back to page topJust because you live by a school does not mean that one has to put up with ignorance and a real lack of respect. GETOVERIT, following you logic...does it mean one should expect to get robbed or have their home invaded because they live in a big city? Anyone who lives here should expect it because they knew there was crime here when they moved in. Clearly the school and its parents have no respect for the surrounding community who are paying their taxes to get no city service.
Peggyr is right: The...
Back to page topPeggyr is right: The Southwest Observer is a forum for neighbors to write about whatever concerns they have - both good and bad. Thank you for the post. I enjoy and encourage dissenting opinions; it's the empathy that results from discussing opposing views that makes us all better people.
And I agree with you, getoverit, that it is a seemingly minor issue in the big picture. But, as both peggyr and smalltowninabigcity have pointed out, it comes down to courtesy ... even though I maintain that it's more serious than that if there's ever an emergency and I need to get somewhere fast.
Still, one of the basic lessons our children should be learning in school is courtesy, and as any teacher will tell you (my wife included ... she's a Chicago Public Schools teacher), courtesy is taught by example. When parents blatantly block the driveways of neighbors just to get a closer spot to school, what does that teach their children? That characteristics like selfishness and arrogance really aren't all that bad.
So what happens when those children become teens and begin driving? I've done a lot of driving in a lot of places in my life, and Chicago drivers are among the worst. So why not begin now by teaching our students that doing something illegal is bad - and believe me, getoverit, you simply can't argue that parking your car, turning off the ignition, locking the doors and walking inside the school for 10-15 minutes isn't illegal.
See, that sort of behavior isn't tolerated in places where parking laws are enforced, places like tow zones and school bus lanes. So why should it be tolerated by a private property owner who is denied his only access to the public right of way by an ignorant parent too lazy to park around the corner and walk?
On another similar note, peggyr mentioned that there isn't anything positive to write about. But I disagree. Just last week I posted that Morgan Park High School was named one of the top public high schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.
This Web site was in no way designed to serve as a constant stream of criticism of our public officials and our neighborhood. We have tried to maintain a balance between the positive news and not-so-positive news, and I think we've done a good job at it.
But I can only do so much. Let me know about something you're proud of in our neighborhoods, something or someone you'd like to see profiled. Or better yet, go ahead and post it yourself. Someone once described the Southwest Observer as a virtual town hall. Makes sense. So go ahead: Stand up and yell something. We're listening.

Back to page topyou know...everyone pays taxes...no matter where you live...
we all deserve to have the cops show up in our time of need. but come on...when a mom is blocking your drive way to let their child out to go to school...do you really have to call the cops? are you that much of a pinhead? are you leaving your driveway right then and there and you are stuck in your driveway??? or are you just looking out your window to see who you can "B" about? it's people like this and their petty ways that keep the cops hands busy while the crooks are breaking into people's houses and holding guns to their heads... i suggest that this man should go to the doctor...get a prescription of paxil...and relax...get a hobby...do something productive!!!! where does this man park his car when letting his children out of the car to go to school...i "betcha" he is blocking someone elses driveway...really there is so much more to life than picking on people that just want to get their children to school safetly... have some compassion...you really must drive your neighbors crazy!
I like your spunk,...
Back to page topI like your spunk, getoverit. But I have to correct you (and reiterate what I already wrote): After more than a year of repeated phone calls to the school itself, I was in the same situation. No results. As a matter of fact, I know a couple people whose children attend the school. They told me that all parents received a letter from the principal asking parents to respect their neighbors.
Still, those people continued to use the end of my driveway as their personal parking spot even after a plea from the principal. So I finally decided to stop calling the school and express my frustration directly to a parent one afternoon after I returned home to find that I was unable to enter my driveway. I had to sit in the street - blocking traffic myself - until she decided to come out of the school and move so I could pull into my driveway. I rolled the window down and expressed my feelings.
She spit at my car and called the police.
(You still think I'm the pinhead, getoverit?)
Only after the police arrived was I told to call 911 - by the officers themselves. The reason? To ensure that there's a record of this pattern. To document it. Same reason I'm photographing all vehicles and license plates that prevent my family from coming or going as we please.
You and I know that I'll never get CPD to respond immediately. That's not my intention. All I'm doing is ensuring that there's a visual and paper record of this pattern whenever possible, which is often because I leave for work and return home around the same time the street turns into a zoo.
And by the way, I don't have a prescription of Paxil. Never got into all that self-medicating. I find that a well-mixed Manhattan or three does the trick just nicely.
